If you’re a new teacher or just looking to upgrade your classroom decor, there are lots of inexpensive ways to make things cute and functional.
1. DIY Banners
Using scrap fabric you can create something for basically nothing–the added bonus? It takes up a lot of wall real estate in a large classroom! You can find cheap fabric at goodwill or big box stores, like Walmart–cruise the clearance section!
2. Can Caddy
Having supplies ready for each table can save time and aggravation. However, buying caddies for all of your tables can add up. These DIY can caddies are so functional and cheap! Start rinsing out those veggie cans now and ask your friends to do the same–a simple Facebook post would probably garner all you need!
3. Flexible Seating
If you can sew and have the time, this is a great way to add flexible seating to your classroom. These crates are a staple in the back to school section and thrifted sheets make for great upholstery fabric!
4. Word Walls
Make swapping out words easy and efficient with this cost-effective idea. Just regular old paper mounted on folders and hung from ribbon with binder clips.
5. Flip sticks–with a personal Touch
Use these to choose partners, call on someone to answer or assign tasks. They’re inexpensive and easy to find. A little marker or paint takes them to the next level. Get creative and have them match your room theme or just your personality!
6. IKEA’s As-Is Section
If you’re lucky enough to live near an ikea, go check out their As-Is section. Items are often marked down for small flaws or because their stock is simply low. With a creative eye, there are tons of opportunities to bring cute decor or flexible seating into your classroom.
7. Frame It!
Frames from the dollar store are a super inexpensive way to make classroom decor look a little more inviting. The added bonus is that they add some durability to what is inside, as well!
8. Labels
Labels are cheap and easy to print and elevate any classroom to a more organized and cohesive space. Take the guesswork out of where things go by making bright, colorful labels for containers you already have.
9. IKEA Frames
These can be used in a variety of ways but this anchor chart hack is especially great!
10. Paper…everything.
Paper is so accessible for teachers and with a little creativity, can make a huge impact. Try to think larger scale, brighter colors and bolder designs when you’re trying to fill your classroom space.
11. Kid-driven Art
As tempting as it is to cover every square inch of your classroom in Pinterest worthy decor, try to leave some open space for student work. It gives kids a sense of pride to see their work on display and serves as a nice reminder of the hard work you have all put in.
Ultimately, no matter how you choose to decorate–remember to do so within your means. Outline a budget not only for your monetary purposes but also for your time. You can go insane trying to perfect the perfect Pinterest classroom but don’t lose sight of the ultimate goal–creating an inviting space conducive to learning that YOU enjoy coming to every day.
