Happy Pride! The month of June is a perfect opportunity to educate learners, young and old, about inclusivity. There are so many ways to not only learn about, but also celebrate Pride Month in the classroom. While it is appropriate to learn about the rich history of Pride with older students, it is certainly just as meaningful to have a little fun with your class around the importance of accepting everyone as they are. Students of all ages love to get creative with the bright, diverse colors of the rainbow.
Here are 15 ways that you can celebrate Pride Month in the classroom:
1. READ about Pride!
There are plenty of books that can be used to start the conversation with your class about what Pride Month is. Using literature to explore different family dynamics is powerful at any age.
2. Research about the history of Pride and notable people throughout time.
Older students will likely find it interesting and moving to learn about how Pride Month came about, while younger students often enjoy zooming in on one aspect of history to become an expert about.
Online tools, like Britannica, can be used for learning and note taking. However, books with vivid illustrations, like Pride by Rob Sanders, are also a great tool for learning about Pride. Students can share out their learning through poster-making or creating a slides presentation!
